The love of family and community inspired the creation of this space. A place for everybody to use and gather, meet and celebrate. If you have ever visited this Hanalei farmers market you will know the feeling precisely. The spirit of its founders can still be felt in the walls of its hale (buildings) and on the grounds; resilient, courageous, loving and kind are words that come to mind. And the same can be said for the farmers and vendors of this Kauai farmers market.
Down a gravel driveway just before the famous Waioli Church, shoppers can admire the breathtaking scenery on their way to the market. Nestled against a stunning backdrop of loi kalo (taro fields) and the majestic Namolokama mountain range is the Hale Ohana O Hanalei community center. Every Saturday the grassy field is transformed into a farmers market with a peaceful, cheery vibe. Farmers greet customers warmly, offering recommendations and amazing deals on their excellent produce.
One aunty known for her fresh baked bread also makes mango salsa, along with just-squeezed soursop juice and mango lemonade. Corn and zuccchini, mangosteen and bitter melon add extra variety to the market mainstays of papaya, banana, mango, and avocado. Local beekeepers bring in fresh honey comb and honey sticks for easy on-the-go drizzling. You can also grab a tub of macadamia nut pesto and bottled-on-the-farm hot sauce to jazz up your meals.
Pookela Sausage Co. puts together an outrageously delicious breakfast sandwich featuring sausage patties made from local pigs mixed with house spices, farm fresh eggs, your choice of cheese, on a taro bun made by Kilauea Bakery & Pizza with the option to add avocado. Finish with their complimentary slices of pineapple and your morning is instantly lifted. In lieu of live entertainment the Outpost Coffee Kauai guys pump out upbeat tunes over the speakers along with freshly brewed espresso and lattes sweetened with homemade dulce de leche.
Two on-site artists display wonderful works of art that compliment the natural beauty of the market grounds. William Eacott, sets up his easel and paints the landscape exquisitely using oil paints and a great eye for depth and detail.
Before the pandemic and inter-island quarantine this Hanalei farmers market was twice its size and filled with people all morning long. Now, the attendance reflects the times and could use more patronage. Boasting an unrivaled site, there are countless reasons to visit this beautiful and bountiful market.
