Upcountry Farmers Market: A Maui Market to Celebrate

The Upcountry Farmers Market has been a mainstay on Maui for over 40 years. Just recently they celebrated their 10-year anniversary at the Kula Malu Shopping center location and gave away hundreds of prizes as a way to say mahalo to their community. With a reputation for being the gathering place for neighbors to shop and socialize it was difficult when the pandemic first hit. Since then, this market has been able to adapt and find success in a time of great uncertainty, which is great news for everyone.

40 vendors from across Maui make this market a mecca of diversity. Local farmers harvest hundreds of pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables. Every Saturday hundreds of people go home happy. For instance, the season everyone waits for – mango and lychee – did not disappoint. Also, avocado and lettuce, starfruit and banana could be found in huge supply. The market starts early and there are many vegan and vegetarian ready made options for breakfast, along with, Thai, Indian, and Korean dishes. If a sweet treat is in order, you can find dairy free ice cream, and gluten free, keto-friendly baked goods as well.

This market also accepts SNAP/EBT and an average of $2,000 is being exchanged every week. The process is quick and simple. Pick the dollar amount you wish to spend, swipe your SNAP/EBT card, and get tokens to spend at any of the produce booths. The market also provides a weekly newsletter with information about the vendors and what’s currently available. Email info@upcountryfarmersmarket.com to be added to their mailing list.

The Upcountry Farmers Market has been implementing changes to their model in order to make the market safe for the community. For a time, they switched gears and started a drive through to keep distance between patrons and vendors. Since then, they have returned back to a walk through model with added safety measures and guidelines.

Signs at every vendors tent remind shoppers to follow the 6 ft. social distancing rule and wear a mask. With every hurdle management has done a great job making sure patrons and vendors enjoy the market with confidence and ease.
