When it comes to farmers markets, the Kohala Food Hub bridges the traditional with the modern. It doesn’t set up shop in the town square, but instead goes live at KohalaFoodHub.com every Friday at 3 pm until Monday at 11 pm to connect local farmers and families through an online marketplace. Shoppers can choose from the freshest locally grown fruit and vegetables as well as locally made healthy snacks, cheese, honey, and specialty personal care products like soap, medicinal tinctures, and more.
Customers place their orders online over the weekend and then are offered a 5 hour window to pick up their bags at the Wishing Well on Wednesdays. From 12:30-5:30pm the parking lot ebb and flow swells with happy customers picking up their customized farm fresh groceries. The Food Hub also offers delivery to folks in Hawi and Kapaau for a small fee. Shopping at the Kohala Food Hub is easy and helps support locally grown food.
The Kohala Food Hub is a local food aggregator and distributor working collaboratively with about 30 local farmers and value-added producers of all sizes to sell local food items to community members, as well as schools and other institutions in the North Kohala community. It was developed to expand the infrastructure needed in North Kohala so local folks can be less reliant upon foods shipped from afar.
It is committed to serve the local community, and every week delivers “Kupuna Care Bags” of locally grown food with close to 200 pounds of food to about 40 local elders and their families. Anyone can help support this program by adding a “Kupuna Sponsorship” item to their weekly purchases on the online marketplace.
Beyond that, the Kohala Food Hub provides a wash pack and large walk-in cooler used by multiple farms and community organizations to process, store, and distribute their produce. The Food Hub’s walk-in fridge is often abuzz as volunteers help local farmers and nonprofit food pantries stock its shelves with donations of perishable staple items to feed our community.
Other services it provides are resources like food-safety training and water testing for local farms. Before the coronavirus closed schools, it also played a key role to help local farmers provide more nutritious food for our local school cafeterias through the Farm to School Program, and it anticipates that program ramping back up again soon.
The Kohala Food Hub is fulfilling a long-standing dream of multiple community organizations, individuals, funders, and legislative stakeholders to revitalize our local food system and strengthen the resilience of North Kohala’s community, economy, and ecosystem.
