HFMA Launches SNAP at Markets Grant Program

at Markets Mini-Grant Program

HFMA is providing $44,500 in mini-grants to farmers markets statewide to help increase access to local produce among low-income communities.

Eligibility: To be eligible for this grant program, your farmers market must:

  • be currently open and active as of December 1st
  • have at least 3 participating farms who sell produce through the farmers market
  • have completed the HFMA 2020 Needs Assessment at https://tinyurl.com/HFMASurvey 
  • have a representative attend the SNAP @ Markets webinar on November 20th at 11am; register at https://tinyurl.com/HFMAWebinar

Timeline:

  • Grant Deadline: Dec. 20th, 2020
  • Awarded: Jan. 20th, 2021
  • Final Report Due: Aug. 1st, 2021

10 SNAP Implementation Grants ($4,000 each)

Markets who want to set up a sustainable SNAP acceptance program at their farmers market are encouraged to apply for funds to assist in paying for expenses to launch the program. Markets will also be provided technical assistance support from HFMA.

Applicants are highly encouraged to learn more about setting up a SNAP program with this step-by-step guide: https://dabux.org/farmers-markets. Those who have applied for FNS authorization at the time of application will be prioritized; markets may do so at https://www.fns.usda.gov/snap/apply-to-accept. Examples of Allowable Costs:

  • SNAP Set-up Technical Assistance & Training/Consultant
  • Startup Supplies (tokens, storage bins, SNAP booth materials, etc.)
  • Marketing (signage, banners, promotional campaigns)

9 SNAP Promotion Grants ($500 each)

Markets who currently accept SNAP are encouraged to apply for funds to assist with increased marketing of their SNAP program to low-income communities. Creativity, partnerships, and targeted campaigns are preferred. Examples of Allowable Costs:

  • Signage, banners, flyers, posters
  • Special promotions (nutrition education, chef demos)

Non-Allowable Project Costs for the grant program include Regular Program/Market Staff or Merchandise for Resale (Hats, T-shirts, etc.). Please attend our webinar for more details!
